‘Susan’
Oil on Canvas · 30” × 15” · 1975
Inspired by Susan, a Berkeley sociologist whose influence proved lasting, this portrait recalls a period spent in Mendocino, California. Together we opened a small café operating on a “pay-as-you-wish” basis rather than fixed menu prices. While the experiment revealed the generosity of some customers, it also exposed the challenges of relying on individual interpretations of value.
